The MIDI Tricorder is a simple midi interface designed to introduce a few types of sensors (button, toggle, knob, light sensor) and an actuator (an led) in a simple and clear way, but with avenues for expansion. The enclosure is created using a 3D printed base and a laser cut top panel. All of the design files are open source, including the arduino code and a set of max patches with some examples of how to work with the tricorder.

This project was developed as part of an introduction to digital interfaces, with a focus on sculptural, spiritual, ecological, and experimental approaches to instrument design and interactive objects. This module was developed for the New Media + Sound Arts program at Emily Carr University. I try to update these materials each time I teach a workshop or course.

“Organized by Archive/Counter-Archive, Worth More Standing is a hybrid screening and live expanded cinema performance featuring the work of Vancouver-based artist Lindsay McIntyre, with sound by Peter Bussigel. The screening and performance will be followed by a short Q&A and a reception.

I developed this project to introduce Arduino and a few types of sensors (button, toggle, knob, light sensor) and an actuator (an led). The MIDI tricorder is a one day workshop that covers many aspects of digital instrument building in a simple way while pointing to various avenues for expansion.  The enclosure is created using 3D printing and laser cutting and the Arduino is a Pro Micro, It connects to a computer as a plug-and-play MIDI or HID controller that you can use with lots of software programs. Pond Sample

In May of 2020, I collected 2 gallons of water, rocks, and sludge from the duck pond on Little Mountain in Vancouver. I observed and recorded the plant and animal life that emerged from this one pond sample over the course of a year. During that time, I added a 3D printed building, a clear plastic orb, concrete blocks, plastic drinking straws, microscope slides, a bit of stained glass, and a ping pong ball. This footage was edited to play during quiet times in a friend’s kindergarten class.
